Sugar! Everyone loves it and considers it evil at the same time (because of the myths). But it’s not that what most of us think it is, it is sweet as its name and you can have it daily also(no regrets ). This post will break your biggest myth about sugar, that sugar is responsible for your obesity and unhealthy body. To begin with, What is Sugar? And, why sugar is not your enemy?
Sugar is a simple carbohydrate and provides energy for the body by breaking down glucose (1gm has 4 kilocalories ). In the form of glucose, it is an immediate source of energy for the brain. Sugar is building a block of our bodies and all break down to the same thing ie. glucose. It is impossible to eliminate it from our diet as it is present in fruits, milk, etc, and depriving oneself of a particular food may end up eating more.
Why sugar is not your enemy?
1.All types of carbs provide the same amount of calories and sugar being the simple carb breakdown quickly and are fast energy sources. They get absorbed and digested very quickly. All types of sugar (brown sugar, honey, syrup, table sugar ) are the same and provide an equal amount of energy.
2. No sugar is healthier or better, they all are the same. We have different fruit drinks in the market which claim they have real fruits in them and most of the sugar they have is natural.
It doesn’t mean they are healthier options, you may find the only ‘fruit’ in fruit drink is fruit flavor, and we must choose whole fruit over these fruit drinks.
So if not sugar, what is making you fat?
- Extra calories make a person fat, let it be from anything (protein, carbs, fats, etc).
- Sugary foods are high in calories and undergo heavy processing as well. But they are not the reason behind your weight. You’ll gain weight when you exceed your daily calorie(amount of energy that your body gets after eating /drinking certain food ) limits.
- Our bodies need calories for energy but those extra calories (if not utilized) result in weight gain. It’s not sugar, fats, protein, carbs, it’s extra calories which is making you unhealthy. You can enjoy your favorite dessert (just don’t indulge ) and still reach your goal weight. Just make sure you stay in your calorie limit and stay active. Stop blaming sugar, as it’s just sweet as its name. 🙂
